In August 2015 Larry Page announced the creation of Alphabet, a new company that took control of Google and of projects far from the core business, such as Calico, X and the investment arms. History

The 2015 founders' letter, published on Alphabet's investor site, opens under the heading "G is for Google". In it, Page explains that Google would become a wholly owned subsidiary of the new company and that it was time for Sundar Pichai to be Google's CEO. Under Alphabet sat Google, by far the largest part, the life sciences efforts, Calico, devoted to longevity, X, home of the Wing drone delivery project, and the investment funds. The shares kept trading on Nasdaq as GOOGL and GOOG.

The arrangement kept the founders in charge until December 3, 2019, when Page and Brin stepped down as Alphabet's CEO and president and Pichai took over both companies. The founders remained shareholders and board members. In the same year Alphabet was created, Google replaced the logo it had used since 1999.
