Google buys Nest for $3.2 billion (2014)

Nest made a connected thermostat, sold since 2011, and the Protect smoke alarm. Its founders, Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, had worked on the iPod and iPhone at Apple. Google paid $3.2 billion in cash, and Nest kept its own brand under Fadell.
