AI Mode, search as a conversation (2025)

First tested in Search Labs, AI Mode was opened to all users in the United States starting at Google I/O on May 20, 2025. It is a Search tab where people ask long and follow-up questions and get an AI-written answer with links to the web. On September 8, 2025 it reached Brazil in Portuguese, with text, image and voice input, using a custom version of Gemini 2.5 and the technique Google calls query fan-out, which splits a question into many simultaneous searches.
